Visa Applications
The American Society for Microbiology invites and welcomes scientists from every part of the world to attend and participate in the General Meeting. Please allow ample time for visa processing, as the application process can take several months in some countries.
To find out if you need a Visa, or for more information on the application process, you may wish to visit the National Academies website.
The leadership of the National Academies is working with the U.S. Government to develop better Visa application and processing. If anyone in your group is experiencing difficulties obtaining a visa, please report the case to the National Academies by completing an online questionnaire.
Security Measures at Airports and Seaports
The United States has recently adopted new security measures at airports and seaports designed to protect the safety of U.S. citizens and international visitors. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security promises that these new measures will be quick and efficient, requiring no more than seconds in most cases. For more information, visit the Department of Homeland Security website.
Travel to the United States
The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 requires that by January 1, 2008 travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico, and Canada have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States. Therefore, the requirement to have a passport in your possession will be required for border crossings as well as air and sea travel on December 31, 2007.
It is important to allow sufficient time for your passport application to be processed. The best time to start is now.
