Call for Abstracts - Student Travel Grants
Two types of student travel grants are available this year. The Corporate Activities Program Student Travel Grant is a $500 grant given to approximately 160 students who will be presenting a poster at the meeting. The Richard and Mary Finkelstein Travel Grant also is a $500 grant given to 6 students whose research is in the area of microbial pathogenesis.
Corporate Activities Program Student Travel Grants
Purpose - To provide support for students attending the General Meeting.
Eligibility - To qualify for consideration the student must:
- Be an ASM Member and the presenting author.
- Be accepted to present a poster at the General Meeting.
- Be an undergraduate/pre-doctoral student, or
- Be a Ph.D. or M.D. whose degree has been or will be awarded after May 2007 and before June 2008.
- Have indicated a desire to be considered for the grant on the abstract submission, and
- submit a letter of nomination from a faculty member or department head on official letterhead. The letter must state that the student is expected to be active in the training or degree program at the time of the meeting. If the student will complete their terminal degree between the date of submission and the meeting, the letter must indicate the expected date of completion. The abstract tracking number must be included in the body of the letter. The letter should be submitted to ASM not later than January 17, 2008.

- The scientific quality of the submitted abstract.
- The student has not received an similar travel grant award in the last two years.
- Only one travel grant per laboratory.
- The student must be a member of ASM, and
- A current letter of nomination for the 108th General Meeting must be on file.
Award - Each Corporate Activities Program Student Travel Grant Award is $500, unrestricted to use to attend the General Meeting. Selection is made by the General Meeting Program Committee. The awards are highly competitive and only about 25-30% of those seeking grants will receive them. If a grant recipient cannot present the accepted poster, the grant money must be returned to ASM.
The Richard and Mary Finkelstein Student Travel Grants
Purpose - To provide support for students attending the General Meeting.
Eligibility - To qualify for consideration the student must:Selection Criteria - Students are selected based on:
- meet all the requirements for a Corporate Activities Program Student Travel Grant (including a letter of nomination), and
- Be presenting research in the area of microbial pathogenesis.
Award - Each Richard and Mary Finkelstein Student Travel Grant Award is $500, unrestricted to use to attend the General Meeting. Only students who have been designated as recipients of the Corporate Activities Program Student Travel Grant are considered for this award. The General Meeting Program Committee will review the abstracts of the CAP Student Travel Grant recipients to select those best meeting the requirements of the Richard and Mary Finkelstein Student Travel Grant. A maximum of six grants will be awarded to students annually. If a grant recipient cannot present the accepted poster, the grant money must be returned to ASM.
